Midway Sale To WB Clears Court, Staff At Two Studios Given NoticeWarner Brothers' bid to purchase much of game publisher Midway won court approval yesterday. The company updated Kotaku and clarified the status of some studios and licenses. The sale to Warner Brothers is expected to close in the next 10 days, according to Midway spokesperson Geoffrey Mogilner. That will put the Mortal Kombat license, the This Is Vegas project, Midway's sports and arcade brands as well as the company's Chicago and Seattle studios under the WB umbrella. Among the studios and properties not part of WB's acquisition are Midway's Newcastle and San Diego studios. The San Diego team has been working on a new TNA game, according to Mogilner, but neither the team nor the wrestling license is part of the WB deal. As reported on Joystiq earlier today, the team at San Diego, as required by law, was given 60 days' notice on Wednesday. Wheelman studio Newcastle had already received similar notice, though Mogilner was uncertain how long ago that had been provided. Newscastle has been working on the new game Necessary Force. The spokesman said it is "entirely possible" that those studios could be acquired, but no bids are on the table. One update about Midway's sports lines: The Blitz brand is part of the Warner Brothers deal, but Midway's NBA Ballers and NFL Blitz games, which were a product of expired Midway deals with pro sports leagues, are not. Kotaku reported WB's interest in Midway in April. The media giant's $33 million bid succeeded after an obligatory waiting period saw no other formal suitors, according to the LA Times. Midway is one of the original video game developers and publishers in the industry, one of the few active companies that was making games before the rise of home consoles. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe's roster of "kombatants" was missing some key names on both sides. That was something series co-creator Ed Boon and the MK team had hoped to address with downloadable content, which never happened. Boon had hinted at appearances from characters like Kung Lao and Doomsday in interviews, showing designs for one MK Vs. DC character that was planned for release, Quan Chi, first introduced in Mortal Kombat 4. The MK team lead released a render of the Mortal Kombat character via his Twitter today. Will we ever see characters like Lobo, Quan Chi and [insert your favorite MK/DC character] added to the crossover fighter? According to Boon, "right now I don't see it happening," despite the fact that he writes those additional downloadable characters were "just about done." With work progressing on Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe now eight months old, we'd guess that Midway and new owners Warner Bros. won't see the value in dedicating more resources to such a thing. Shame.

Despite financial turmoil at Mortal Kombat publisher Midway, the Chicago-based MK team is soldiering on with the ninth fighting game in the series, currently known only as MK9. Series co-creator Ed Boon says it will definitely be M-rated.
Boon has been dropping small tidbits about the bloody fighting game sequel via his Twitter account, writing "Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick!!" Boon also backs up what he told us last year during an interview at Comic-Con, that Mortal Kombat 9 will be a Mature rated game—and it "isn't going to have Superheroes in it"—unlike the T-rated, toned down Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
"People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK," Boon writes. He previously ponders "I hope we aren't taking these too far."
We've talked to a couple MK team members over the past year who have told us similar things, that MK9 would be "disgusting" in its violence, a return to form that we expect will be cathartic to longtime Mortal Kombat fans turned off by the less gory MK vs. DC... and maybe even a few of the game's developers.

Eh can't say I have high hopes for this game after Armageddon and MK vs DC. In this day and age, blood and gore isn't enough to make a great video game. YOu have to do phenominal work with the fatalities, characters, and special moves to make people overlook one of the worst fighting game engines honestly lol. If they keep pro moves or that broken rage mode, that's enough to keep me from buying it.

Armageddon was good, the ones before that weren't; so far my list of good MK games is the original trilogy and then Armageddon. This one will most likely be good

I just hope it doesn't feel as ''clunky'' for the 9th time around. Deadly Alliance and Deception just... sucked. Armeggeddon would be absolutely the same if it wasn't for the novelty of it including 99% of all characters who ever appeared; and MK vs DC was nice, but again it's a novelty of pummelling SuperMan's smug face in. I personally loved Shoulin Monks, but I know that 'Scrolling Beat 'Em Ups' aren't eveyone's cup of tea.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh boyeeee!!!!!!!
Damn I was thinking they would be dead. Armagedon only had the CAF and conquest that I really liked. The fighting is something they should worry about like having a run button like in MK3 to MKT every body should have there own special abilties like Sub-Zero should be able to take more damage since hes ice but if anybody that uses fire goes against him it takes his ice defense down. Shang Tsu can revive his soul by taking a piece of yours but when against Scorpion or a cybor ninja he can't because they are souless. Noob Saibot can be a stealthy guy by being able to roll out of the way. Jax can be a good grappler meaning his grapples are easier to catch. Striker can be good at long range fighting. Kenshi better at weapons. Shit like that

I doubt you'll see that or at least done well with Mortal Kombat's fighting engine. It'll lead to characters overpowered(as if Mortal Kombat doesn't have a problem with that already).
I say just let the franchise die with what little dignity it has left. It's gone from infamous for being a gory violent game to infamous for being having a horrible fighting engine.

I thought Armageddon was supposed to be the end of all the former characters. I wonder how this storyline will play out. Not that I'm sad to see a lot of people back

I don't know if that video is in-game footage, but it doesn't look 'clunky and difficult to control' like Deadly Alliance/Defiance/Armegeddon/vsDCUniverse were. Even though my stupid ass has almost bought every MK game made (excluding SubZero Mythologies, Special Forces and 4:Gold, but including Trilogy and Shoulin Monks) - IT HAD BETTER BE THAT FLUID IN-GAME!

Where's mah Scorpion! Edit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_9Mortal Kombat is an upcoming fighting game in the Mortal Kombat series. It is in development by NetherRealm Studios (formerly known as Midway Games) for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.[2][3] The game was first hinted at by developer Ed Boon on January 2009, shortly after the release of the previous game in the franchise, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.[4] In a November 2008 interview, Ed Boon stated that he believed Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's performance would reflect upon what features what would be put in "the next game", presumably Mortal Kombat 9.[5] On June 18, 2009, Ed Boon confirmed in his Twitter page that they were performing motion capture for the game. He also revealed that the game will not have superheroes in it[6], thus ruling out an immediate follow-up to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. He also stated that they were going back to its bloody origins[7] and they were aiming for a "Mature" rating, contrary to the "Teen" rating attained by the previous game. He even questioned "going too far" and showed concern about crossing the limit to "Adults Only" rating.[8][9] It has been said that online for Mortal Kombat will become a main priority [10], which GamePro editors called a "smart move"[7], and in January 2010 a screenshot of Ed Boon's personal PSN ID was published, which suggested that online testing of Mortal Kombat was underway.[11] Dan Forden is expected to return as the music composer for the game.[12] The game was revealed on June 10, 2010, and is expected to release sometime in 2011.[13] A trailer was released on that day, which showed the game returning to a 2D plane of fighting, with other new features including a tag team mode.[14] Confirmed Characters: Sub-Zero Raiden Shao Kahn Johnny Cage Nightwolf Reptile Mileena Kung Lao Sektor

If the game is 2D only, I won't be getting it. I would much rather play the last few MK games, which I thought were awesome and really expanded on the franchise.
